Waiting on Wednesday: Jane by Robin Maxwell

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW: Jane by Robin Maxwell

Scheduled to be released: September 18, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
My sister recommended this book to me on Goodreads* a few weeks ago.

Tarzan is among my top 10 favorite Disney films of all time. I've seen the original Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes and liked it too. My laptop is named Burroughs after Edgar Rice Burroughs. Are we seeing a pattern here?

Perhaps my love of the jungle and living in the wild spawns from daydreaming while watching The Swiss Family Robinson growing up. I would watch it over and over. I never wanted to see them leave the island and I was desperate to find myself on a ship destined for a shipwreck. Do you think a real estate agent can help with tree house property listings?

I have never been apt to read stories from the male perspective. I find that I relate better to a female narrator/protagonist. Gee I wonder why? This is the main reason why a new take on the story is so exciting to me! The author even received permission from the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate to write this book. She can take that to the bank! Let's celebrate the 100 years of Tarzan by reading from Jane's point of view! I can't wait!!!

Book Synopsis:
Synopsis from Goodreads

Cambridge, England: 1905. Jane Porter is hardly a typical woman of her time. The only female student in Cambridge University’s medical program, she is far more comfortable in a lab coat, dissecting corpses, than she is in a corset and gown, sipping afternoon tea. A budding paleoanthropologist, Jane dreams of travelling the globe in search of fossils that will prove the evolutionary theories of her scientific hero, Charles Darwin.

When dashing American explorer Ral Conrath invites Jane and her father on an expedition deep into West Africa, she can hardly believe her luck. Rising to the challenge, Jane finds an Africa that is every bit exotic and fascinating as she has always imagined. But she quickly learns that the lush jungle is full of secrets—and so is Ral Conrath. When danger strikes, Jane finds her hero, the key to humanity’s past, and an all-consuming love in one extraordinary man: Tarzan of the Apes.

WoW: Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, #7) by Patricia Briggs

Scheduled to be released: March 5, 2013

Why I'm waiting:

First off seeing those words, even if in a nice book shaped graphic, 'No Image Available' is like getting a repeating ERROR pop-up box on your computer screen courtesy of a virus . . . in other words it isn't pretty.

Second reaction . . . March!? MARCH?!? I have to wait until March!?! Listen Mrs. Briggs don't you live your writing life according to my schedule? I'm way past due on the 'I need more of Mercy Thompson' meter. We're talking 2 years missy! (insert gracious humble smile)

Third reaction  . . . Victory dance! (Albeit not as enthusiastic if the publication date was moved up to say November. Heck I would even take December.)

On a serious note, I always enjoy Mercy's many adventures and Patricia Briggs' writing style is one of my favorites out there. I can't wait, but I suppose I must. Unless someone is up for a raiding party, manuscript anyone? (insert 'evil' smile)

Book Synopsis:
(At least we get this much)
Synopisis from Goodreads:

Shapeshifter Mercy Thompson's life is calming down, at least enough that she can focus on mundane matters like Black Friday sales. But on her return, Mercy is unable to contact her mate, Alpha Adam Hauptman, or the other members of their pack. All she knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam's disappearance may be related - and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from the most unlikely of allies: the vampire seethe.

I wanted to apologize for missing yesterday's Tattoo Tuesdays. I had every intention of posting and then the internet decided it needed to take a nap for the entire day because a storm. Nice job internet!

Waiting on Wednesday: Mortal Fire by C.F. Dunn

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW: Mortal Fire (Secret of the Journal, #1) by C.F. Dunn

Scheduled to be released: August 1, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
LibraryThing is offering Mortal Fire this month on their Early Reviewer list. I requested it and I'm very hopeful to receive a copy.

You know me and covers, this cover is very...alluring. For the sake of WoW I decided to read a little bit of the synopsis. History mystery fiction is one of my favorite genres and this seems to be such a book. I love reading books that weave the past and the future and throw in a mystery. I can't wait!

What are you waiting for?

Book Synopsis:
Synopisis from Goodreads:
First book in a new series from an author to watch Twenty-nine-year-old, independent, and self-assured Cambridge history professor Emma D'Eresby has one obsession in life: the curious journal of a seventeenth-century Englishman, a portion of which was left to her by her late grandfather.

When an unexpected opportunity to study the journal in its entirety presents itself, Emma finds herself leaving Cambridge to take up a year-long position at a prestigious university in Maine. Anticipating a quiet year of research, Emma quickly discovers her work impeded by a range of unforeseen complications. From the start, there is the well-intentioned matchmaking of her vivacious Russian colleague, Elena Smalova, and the unexpected jailing of one of her post-graduate students. More troublesome, however, are the unsolved, brutal night attacks on women near the university and Emma's suspicion that they might be linked to the sinister English professor, Kort Staahl. But, most diverting and disconcerting of all, is Emma's growing attraction to the strikingly handsome Dr. Matthew Lyons, whose kind but deliberately distant demeanor puzzles her.

Suspense and dread mount when Kort begins to take a persistent and unsettling interest in Emma. What are Kort's intentions, and what is he capable of? And the mystery surrounding Matthew only deepens when Emma discovers a link between him and the journal. What is Matthew trying to hide?

Waiting on Wednesday: A Corner of White by Jaclyn Moriarty

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW: A Corner of White (The Colors of Madeleine #1) by Jaclyn Moriarty

Scheduled to be released: September 18, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
Hello! It's Jaclyn Moriarty and her main character has my name. Well almost, slightly different spelling, hers is more French.

On a serious note; I still remember my first encounter with Ms. Moriarty. Is she related to that Moriarty? Okay sorry I couldn't resist, but you can't tell me you were not thinking the same thing.

My sister had recently checked out The Year of Secret Assignments from our local library and devoured it. I would hear her reading it and she would constantly be laughing. I thought, "I have to read this book, if it makes her laugh so much." I did and it was even better than I could have expected.

My sister and I frequently recommend The Year of Secret Assignments to our friends and customers. What is better than Australian YA immersed in humor?

I'm excited to read this because it is Fantasy and I've wanted something new from Ms. Moriarty. Also you know me...I'm all about covers and shout outs. Look who gave her a shout out (she didn't need it for me)!

Book Synopsis:

Synopisis from Goodreads:
Madeleine Tully lives in Cambridge, England, the World – a city of spires, Isaac Newton and Auntie’s Tea Shop.

Elliot Baranski lives in Bonfire, the Farms, the Kingdom of Cello – where seasons roam, the Butterfly Child sleeps in a glass jar, and bells warn of attacks from dangerous Colours.

They are worlds apart – until a crack opens up between them; a corner of white – the slim seam of a letter.

A mesmerising story of two worlds; the cracks between them, the science that binds them and the colours that infuse them.

Be sure to add A Corner of White to your Goodreads!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW: The Raven Boys (Book 1 of the Raven Cycle) by Maggie Stiefvater

Scheduled to be released: September 18, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
I think it is clear from previous blog posts, how much I enjoy Maggie Stiefvater's writing. Plus her books seem to get better and better. Short and simple explanation this week. (insert smile) Oh yes and raven on the cover . . . ravens are so 'Edgar Allan Poeish' and therefore must be devoured as such. A cycle! We get a cycle! How many books is that again?

Book Synopsis:
You can read the synopsis I'm about to post from Goodreads or . . . you can watch the book trailer!

Synopisis from Goodreads:
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Scheduled to be released: October, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
Jacky Faber is like the cute puppy you never want to grow up because you can't get enough! I always enjoy her adventures. L.A. Meyer is a truly gifted writer. His love of everything pirates, sea and ships is so evident you are sure to suddenly have aspirations of "I want to be a pirate (or Jacky Faber) when I grow up!"

I didn't realize how far behind I was in the series until I checked today. Guess what?!? Come October I'm splurging and buying all the books I haven't yet, including this one! (Perhaps I won't wait that long to buy them all.)

Waiting on Wednesday: Quintana of Charyn by Melina Marchetta

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW:
Quintana of Charyn (Book 3 of the Lumatere Chronicles) by Melina Marchetta

Scheduled to be released:
September 26, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
There is something to be said for an author who has you so convinced that their books are awesome that you are willing to say you can't wait for book 3...having not read book 2 yet. I'm nearly finished with Finnikin of the Rock (Book 1) and it just goes to show you, never underestimate your public library's ability to finally get something read worthy. I even ordered Finnikin of the Rock and (book 2) Froi of the Exiles (due to arrive today!) having not finished Finnikin. Are you convinced yet you should read these books? No?!? Don't worry I'm hopeful to post a review for Finnikin when I'm finished. Ahhh I can't wait!

Book Synopsis:
I definitely can't read this one (synopsis I mean)! However, the only thing posted on Goodreads is:

The third book in the world of Lumatere. Set three weeks after the ending of Froi of the Exiles.

Oh very helpful...

Checkout the author's website, though, because I think her blog post here talks more about book three.

Did I already say I can't wait?!?

Waiting on Wednesday: Sacrifice by Cayla Kluver

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW:
Sacrifice (Legacy #3) by Cayla Kluver

Scheduled to be released:
November 2012

Why I'm waiting:
I'm always hard press not to finish a series, unless the series causes me physical pain because I can't bare the thought of finishing it. Such is not the case with Cayla Kluver's Legacy Trilogy. I read Legacy a few years ago and have been waiting ever since for the follow up novels. When I was thinking about today's WoW, I thought "Hey, you haven't checked up on Cayla's writing lately." My surprise? Book 2, Allegiance, has been out since February of this year. Shame on me! I hear my paycheck talking to me. . . set aside some money, you are BUYING THIS BOOK!

I'm glad to hear we will not have to wait as long for book 3 as we did for book 2. I'm not psyched about the cover art that Harlequin Teen is using (I prefer the original theme from the first publication of Legacy). However, hopefully I can move past my normal judging a book by its cover and enjoy what originally drew me to Cayla's book.

Book Synopsis:

There is not a book synopsis available yet, but check back at Cayla's blog for updates.

Waiting on Wednesday: Steampunk Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW:
Steampunk: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Scheduled to be released:
May 8, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
Hello! Cover lust anyone?!?

Seriously, though, I came across this in my research for my Steampunk article, that is to be featured in the next bookstore newsletter, and suddenly I had the urge to read Frankenstein. I had seen the Steampunk Poe book on one of my book buying excursions and nearly purchased it. Now I see I will have to buy both! I just want to reach out and touch the cover.

Book Synopsis:

Everyone is familiar with Mary Shelley’s classic novel, but no one has read it like this! Frankenstein is the long celebrated gothic tale of a science experiment gone awry. But in this brand-new edition, Shelley's haunting horror story is transformed with the addition of steampunk-inspired art by Manuel Sumberac.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Solitary House

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

WoW:
The Solitary House by Lynn Shepherd

Scheduled to be released:
May 1, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
This week my WoW is a book I have my fingers crossed I will win an ARC of, The Solitary House. I didn't read the summary, but I did read the bit about the author's previous book being a reimagined murder take on Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. That was enough to entice me. Well and I read a little further than that (guilty) and found out this one is set Dickens' world. Mystery and Dickens? How much better can it get? A great cover of course!

Book Synopsis:
Lynn Shepherd’s first acclaimed novel of historical suspense, Murder at Mansfield Park, brilliantly reimagined the time of Jane Austen. Now, in this spellbinding new triumph, she introduces an unforgettable duo of detectives into the gaslit world of Dickens.

London, 1850. Charles Maddox had been an up-and-coming officer for the Metropolitan police until a charge of insubordination abruptly ended his career. Now he works alone, struggling to eke out a living by tracking down criminals. Whenever he needs it, he has the help of his great-uncle Maddox, a legendary “thief taker,” a detective as brilliant and intuitive as they come.

On Charles’s latest case, he’ll need all the assistance he can get.

To his shock, Charles has been approached by Edward Tulkinghorn, the shadowy and feared attorney, who offers him a handsome price to do some sleuthing for a client. Powerful financier Sir Julius Cremorne has been receiving threatening letters, and Tulkinghorn wants Charles to—discreetly—find and stop whoever is responsible.

But what starts as a simple, open-and-shut case swiftly escalates into something bigger and much darker. As he cascades toward a collision with an unspeakable truth, Charles can only be aided so far by Maddox. The old man shows signs of forgetfulness and anger, symptoms of an age-related ailment that has yet to be named.

Intricately plotted and intellectually ambitious, The Solitary House is an ingenious novel that does more than spin an enthralling tale: it plumbs the mysteries of the human mind.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Wicked and the Just

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

The clue that you are VERY behind on your book keeper tracker of-er list? When you have to search for an hour to find a book for WoW. My Amazon wishlist, which acts as a precursor to my Goodreads account, is usually the go to, to see what books I have waiting to be read, but are not out yet. I have been busy or lazy, you decide. Although maybe this is the universes method of intervention because I can never just add ONE book to my Amazon wishlist (darn recommendations).

WoW:

The Wicked and the Just by J. Anderson Coats

Scheduled to be released:
April 17, 2012

Why I'm waiting:

If you haven't read here before, you might not know that I'm horrible about judging a book by it's cover. It is a nasty tendency and the main reason why I picked The Wicked and the Just. I don't read inside covers or book summaries online, I like to be surprised. I do know this book is Historical Fiction, though, and that is one of my favorite genres to read.

This is Ms. Anderson Coats debut novel and I'm always intrigued by an author's first book. It is motivation to make me purchase a copy, rather than pilfer it from my library (I don't steal, I just like that word). I'd like to hope that little ole me purchasing a copy of an author's book goes a long way. Someday I hope someone would extend the same courtesy to my first book. Good luck Ms. Anderson Coats!

Book Synopsis:

Cecily longs to return to her beloved Edgeley Hall, where her father was lord of the manor. But now he has completely ruined her life. He is moving them to Caernarvon, in occupied Wales, where he can get a place for almost nothing, since the king needs good strong Englishmen to keep down the vicious Welshmen. At least Cecily will get to be the lady of the house at last—if all goes well.

Gwenhwyfar knows all about that house. Once she dreamed of being the lady there herself, until the English came and destroyed the lives of everyone she knows. Now Gwenhwyfar must wait hand and foot on this bratty English girl who has taken what should have been hers.

While Cecily struggles to find her place amongst the snobby English landowners, Gwenhwyfar struggles just to survive. And meanwhile the Welsh are not as conquered as they seem. Outside the city walls of Caernarvon, tensions are rising ever higher—until finally they must reach the breaking point.

Waiting on Wednesday: Tigers and Mini Reviews

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

Perhaps I'm cheating by including reviews in this post along with my WoW, but I can't help myself. I think you'll understand why.

WoW:
Tiger's Destiny (The Tiger Saga #4) by Collen Houck
Scheduled to be released:
September 4, 2012

My initial comments: One. Ms. Houck if you would like to publish sooner than September, you won't hear any complaints from me. I'm sure many of your fans agree. Two. If you want to publish 2 books in one year, I'm sure you'll find many eager and agreeable fans out there as well. Three. Hopefully Goodreads has it wrong when they list book four as having only 250 pages. That just won't do. Four. Cover art please?!?

Why I'm waiting:
Here is where the mini reviews come into play.

Tiger's Curse (book 1):

My friend recommended this book to me by saying, "You must read this! It will blow Twilight out of the water. It is so good." Okay. . . well here's the thing Twilight is not that hard to blow out of the water, especially when you don't find it well written to begin with. However, I'm a good friend (I think) and decided to read this book based on her ravings.

Yikes! I hate to be mean, but it is painfully obvious this is the author's first book. Lots of plot holes and character development is extremely lacking, not to mention what there is of it is too quick to be considered normal. Kelsey is so naive and trusting that I just have to wonder, do people read this and think this would be someone's true reaction? I can't imagine any foster parents (Kelsey's real parents are deceased) not caring as much as these people don't seem to care that she just met this old guy, suddenly is an "expert" when it comes to Tigers, and is leaving for India. I'm not being kind, I realize. I didn't like reading it and feeling as though I was hitting myself in the head constantly thinking "Duh!" or "That would never happen!" The book is fantasy, yes, but even the most far-fetching fantasy story out there has a level of believability to it.

Tiger's  Quest (book 2):

Intentionally reminiscent of New Moon or just a coincidence?

Kelsey and Ren (sigh) find themselves separated at the end of the last book. (spoiler sorry) COMMUNICATION folks it works wonders! However, the reason I like this is because reactions seem truer to nature (unlike another teenage girl whose life seems about to end when sparkle boy leaves her). This also gave Kelsey and Ren the chance to develop a relationship on more than physical attraction.

I'm a big fan of poetry and quotes and enjoyed how the author sprinkled these throughout; especially when she uses them as a bantering competition between Kelsey and Ren. I do not like Kishan and he needs to leave. Love triangles have these maddening affects on me; I tend to want to bash a character on the head over and over until they wake up. Typically it is the girl, because she throws around this nonsense "I love you both." Although that comes into play more in the third book than in this book.

Perhaps it is the place I'm at in my life, relationship wise, that brings many of the themes to the forefront and connect me so strongly, but I couldn't get enough of this book. I will admit (DON'T JUDGE ME) that I did cry at the end of this book. I saw it coming and my heart kept teetering on the edge begging that it wouldn't be so, but it was. I will not tell you what happened; you will have to read it yourself!

Tiger's Voyage (book 3):

While this book kept me reading, it was solely because I had to know what was going to happen. Otherwise this book drug on a bit and didn't keep me occupied as well as book 2. My library didn't have book 3 yet, so I was "forced" (a little too willingly) to purchase the book in order to read it.

I think it is extremely evident that the author has done her homework. There is so much culture and history and research thrown in, that I can imagine she worked hard to write these books. I mean they learn how to deep sea dive and she describes it in great detail. I've never been, but I can assume she knows what she is talking about. If not, she is good at pretending.
Kishan leave already! When he first comes into the books, he seems macho and just the least bit narcissistic. Suddenly in this book he is a love sick, pushover, and a wimp. Love does not become him very well. I feel only the least bit sorry for him, because dumb Kelsey can't seem to make up her mind. I will sympathize with her some, in that even in real life you come to the point where you are so confused and lost, you just want for someone to tell you straight and clear, "This is what you are so supposed to do!" None of this cryptic nonsense that constantly gets thrown at us and we have to do the "adult" thing and decide ourselves. Humph not fair . . .

Favorite parts are the moments of jealousy. I don't know about you, but a hot guy + obvious signs of jealousy = HOTTIE. . . for me anyway.

You might at this point, be asking yourself than A. Why is another book in the serious your WoW? and B. Why did you finish and read the other books?

Surprise! I've got an answer!

Hot Indian guys aside (sigh), Ms. Houck has a knack for entertaining her readers, regardless of the other downfalls I found in the books. I appreciated how clean the books are compared to the majority of YA fantasy out there, but there was just enough to keep the "ole" romantics at heart satisfied. I kept turning the pages because I had to figure how these poorly written characters were going to finagle their way out in a manner that seemed half plausible. These books suck you in! At least if you are a sucker for love triangles (which seem to be in every other novel written these days) and for shape-shifting hot guys!

I find it encouraging (wanting to be a published author myself someday) that Ms. Houck was able to get her books published, mostly, due to a huge fan following that supported her by crying out for MORE. It is amazing she was able to publish 3 books in 1 year! I hope she continues to write and that by writing more, she may hone her skills and encourage other up and coming authors that, it is possible.

A side note, according to her website her books have been optioned for the big screen by Paramount. Now Paramount, do you think you can do a better job than Summit has done with Twilight

This was a long post, sorry. I hope you enjoyed it and that it made sense. Perhaps these books have affected me more than I realized. :)

Waiting on Wednesday: You have Power! Touch of Power

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)
(I picked this cover because I like it much more than the American version. Not fair Australia always gets the better covers!)
WoW:
Touch of Power (Healer #1) by Maria V. Snyder
Scheduled to be released:
December 20, 2011 (Just in time for Christmas!)

Why I'm waiting:
All day I've been trying to remember where I first picked up a book by Maria V. Snyder. I think it was at the library. I know it was her book, Poison Study. The cover was stunning and of course the word 'poison' is enough to intrigue anyone. Since reading the Study Series I've read most of her other books and can't miss anything new coming out!

Book 1 Summary:

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan assumes their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Territories, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.

Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life...

Waiting on Wednesday: Timeless

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created byJill at Breaking The Spine.)

I realize it is almost 11:00 PM, but better late than never. I've been working and baking. . . Thanksgiving is tomorrow after all. I didn't want to slack, though, and took a break to write a WoW post.

WoW:
Timeless (Parasol Protectorate #5) by Gail Carriger

Scheduled to be released:
March 1, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
Gail Carriger's books are an adventure. Each time I sit down to begin, the pages fly by and I look up to find that I've finished and had wild fun along with all the hilarious characters. The setting of the books are great. Plus they are steampunk, they have vampires, werewolves, ghosts. . . a bit of something for everyone. I can't wait for another read with Alexia Tarabotti!

Book 5 Summary:
Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire's second best closet, and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural willy-nilly. Even Ivy Tunstell's acting troupe's latest play, disastrous to say the least, cannot put a damper on Alexia's enjoyment of her new London lifestyle.

Until, that is, she receives a summons from Alexandria that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her? Why is the God-Breaker Plague suddenly expanding? And how has Ivy Tunstell suddenly become the most popular actress in all the British Empire?

Waiting on Wednesday (WoW): Fair Game

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

I wanted to give this post more justice, but I'm in a rush and didn't want another week to go by without doing a Waiting on Wednesday post.

WoW:
Fair Game (Alpha and Omega 3) by Patricia Briggs

Date is set to come out:
February 7, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
I first sunk my teeth into Patricia Briggs, when I read her book Moon Called and then from there on out I couldn't get enough. I hate to say it, but I almost like her Alpha and Omega series better. Okay. . . yes I do. The Mercy Thompson series is getting long. This series feels fresh, new, exciting with a look at some of the same characters, but with new better ones too. Hello Charles!

Patricia Briggs really has a knack for writing about delicate characters who have been through crap. I really respect that about her skills. I can't wait to read more about Anna and Charles.

You know me I'm not big on plot summaries, but I thought I should include it for you today.
When the FBI request a pack consultant on a serial killer case they're following in Boston, Anna and Charles are sent in. They quickly realize that not only the last two victims were werewolves – all of them were.

Someone is targeting their kind. And if Charles and Anna can't get to the bottom of this mystery, they may be next...

Waiting on Wednesday (WoW): I want to suck your blood (insert accent)

It has been a while since I've done a Waiting on Wednesday. In fact I'm ashamed to say my book lists have been suffering as well. I haven't taken the chance to add lots to my wishlist, which usually acts as my personal secretary to let me know, "Hello! There is an awesome book coming out today." I was forced (in a good way) to search through my Goodreads tbr because the wishlist was out of date just a bit.

WoW:
Jessica Rules the Dark Side
by Beth Fantaskey

Date that it will finally come out:
January 10, 2012

Why I'm waiting:
I originally read Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side
on a whim. Mostly because I was in the mood for a light read and vampires was just the icing on the cake. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. It really drew me in on an emotional level and I was left near speechless. I know, right? It was just a vampire YA novel, but still I really liked it. At the time I finished the book, it didn't look as though Ms. Fantaskey was going to write anymore about our beloved Jessica and Lucius. I'm glad she decided to and I can't wait to read more about Lucius. . . okay Jessica too.

-Waiting on Wednesday's was not my own creation. I got it from another blog I read, The Magic of Ink. Thanks!

-9/14/11 3:30 PM update: I just found out (thanks to IceyBooks) that the person responsible for creating Waiting on Wednesday is
Jill at Breaking The Spine, but no harm in telling your where I originally got the idea from too, right? Enjoy!

Bookstore, Teaching, Waiting on Wednesday (WoW) = Book Teaser from author Maggie Stiefvater

My last posted I ended with the abrupt news (not much details sorry) that I’m opening a bookstore with my sister. Things are progressing and the worry I feel everyday sometimes feels like a plague taking over my body. I hate worrying, but damn if I’m not good at. My mom and sister are going to pick the keys up today, I’m stuck being bored at work. Elyza and I have to pick paint colors. Let me rephrase that, Elyza and I have to AGREE on colors. She wants the shop to be painted with Nanny McPhee colors (have you seen the movie? Lots of color!). I’m more into earth tones, quaint, colors that breathe silence. I’m interested to see who wins this battle or how we’ll mange to combine our tastes. (I should post a picture of our bedroom so you can see how different we are.) I have briefly discussed with my mom postponing opening until either later in October or early November. Not quite feeling ready to open in a little more than 3 weeks. So is it killing you yet? Do you want to know the shop name? Maybe I should make you suffer some more. Oh alright I tell you already, stop whining! J (Drum roll please!) Pete & Freddy’s Pages Aplenty. For those of you who don’t live in Indiana and aren’t crazy enough to drive long distances to bookstores we do plan to sell books online at various places. In the distant future, very distant, we may have our own website for this. Don’t worry I’m sure I’ll let you know.

I haven’t brought this up to my mom, but I’m considering offering to teach my brothers Creative Writing class. She was going to pay someone, but that person hasn’t gotten back to her yet. Plus I love writing and I always want to be more a part of my mom’s homeschooling stuff. The only thing is balancing everything and convincing her I can. Work, bookstore, bookstore, bookstore, me time, and bookstore. Ahhhh, craziness! I’m currently compiling a list of writing projects for my brothers to present to her. A. David, is a very gifted writer (he has a blog, only 3 posts so far, but I really enjoy reading it). Reece well he is hard to motivate, but I can feel, when I read his stuff I feel like he has something there just waiting to burst. I know you’re probably asking, “Maddie what makes you think you’re the one for this task?” It is more for selfish reasons truly. I love writing and miss it so much. Maybe this would give me my own personal motivation to not give up on writing. I’d really like to get closer to my brothers as well.

Okay and now what you’re really here for, Waiting on Wednesdays. I haven’t posted anything for awhile for this, but today I have a really great book for it. I can’t wait to read it. I also have a Teaser from the author. The book is Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater. I first came across Maggie’s books when I saw a book trailer for her book Shiver. At the time the book wasn’t out and I hadn’t read anything by her. I went to the library and luckily they had a copy of her book Lament. I had to wait on Elyza to read it first, but finally did read it. I’ve never been the fairy reading type really. I like fantasy, don’t get me wrong just haven’t had much contact with fairies in my reading adventures. I’m ‘Waiting on Wednesday’ for Ballad because it is sort of the sequel to Lament. I liked the first book. It had me laughing and thoroughly intrigued with the outcome of the characters. I always enjoy getting to read an authors first book. There is something so fresh and exciting about their first book. Ballad is about one of the characters from Lament that was not a main character. Anyways I’m sure you’re ready for me to stop chattering on about it and move on to the Teaser.

This is a teaser from Maggie Stiefvater's BALLAD, a novel involving homicidal faeries and kissing that's coming out October 1st.

He turned towards me. For a long moment, he stood facing me. I was held, anchored to the ground – not by his music, which still called and pushed against the music already in my head and said grow rise follow – but by his strangeness. By his fingers, spread over the ground, holding something into the earth, by his shoulders, squared in a way that spoke of strength and unknowability, and most of all, by the great, thorny antlers that grew from his head, spanning the sky like branches.

Then he was gone, and I missed his going in the instant that the sun fell off the edge of the hill, abandoning the world to twilight.

Buy it here. Enter the contest at Maggie's blog here or here.

You can also see a really cool book trailer for Ballad (with bagpipes!) on her blog post here.

Okay that's enough for now, I need to go home. Have a great evening everyone!
